July 20 (Wed): Digital Media & Camtasia

There are a variety of digital media programs and tools at your disposal at Haverford College that can be used to deepen your student’s understanding of the material taught in your course. In this workshop, we will both look at existing digital media projects that have been produced across a number of disciplines, and look at lessons learned, timeframes, and student commitment. We will also look at how to use a particular digital media production tool called “Camtasia,” which will help both professors and students produce videos that feature screen captures and other examples presented from your computer.

July 26 (Tue): Overview of Moodle

Moodle is a one-stop-shop for your course. Use Moodle to get a photo roster, email students, collect assignments, track grades, and perform other types of class management. Provide students with the information and tools they need to succeed in your course and engage with each other.

This workshop is perfect for those new to Haverford, new to Moodle, or looking for a refresher on Moodle fundamentals. This is a hands-on workshop. Start working on a fall course or just experiment in a sample course. At the end of the workshop you will be able to see photo rosters for your classes, email students, select a course format appropriate for your needs, upload syllabi and readings, and get ideas for other ways to use Moodle. Participants in this course may also be interested in the more advanced Moodle courses on August 9 and August 23.

August 9 (Tue): Use Moodle for student submissions

Moodle provides several tools to help you collect, organize, and grade student work. It also allows students to easily share work, and even engage in peer review. In this workshop, we will experiment using the Moodle assignment, student folder, and Moodle forum as tools to collect, grade, and—when desired—share student work. You will be able to see how these tools work from both the teacher and student perspectives. This is a great opportunity to try out ideas for creating assessments and get feedback from your peers!

Google has a variety of tools at your disposal that are often underutilized or overlooked. These tools can help you in the classroom and with the coursework you assign. In this workshop, we will explore some of the less advertised functions Google has that will make your life easier. For example, you can add captions to any playable video within your browser or quickly start a new document with a simple url.
